I'm very proud to announce that my book 'A girl a dream' will be published tomorrow, sadly only in Dutch so far. 'A girl a dream' will be published in German on the 23rd of September this year ["Ein Mädchen, ein Traum", Delius Klasing Verlag]. I'm really trying to get it translated and published into English as well but haven't had any success so far. So I'm really sorry for my English fans as they will have to wait a little longer.

Dick Dekker will also become a promising man of action. Before the turn of the centenary he put up his patterns in a corner of a coalshed and as the years went on it became an impressive big white ship that he has already tested an which is now waiting in the harbour for further improvement. I´m curiously searching for Dick, the builder of this ship, that reminds me to the arc of Noah because of its size. On my question if he is preparing for a new Deluge caused by global warming he laughs like a young boy, but declares that this is not an arc but a sailship. A friendly fourty-yearold who has his home on this ship together with his daughter Laura and their dog Spot. His motivations to work on this is come from himself and have been decisive for his life since he was a little kid.
When he was a young boy he preferred being outside and occupying himself with boats for discovering the world by sailing. He built around a dozen boats. He is willingly answering my questions in a modest way that does not meet his extraordinary creation. "Havör" is the norwegian word for sea eagle and it was designed an drew by Dick from a model of a norwegian trawler. He saw a boat of this type in a harbour during his circumnavigation with his family, also with a selfbuild sailboat. Not caring much about the boats size and the room that it would offer he became that impressed by the sailing qualities of this boat that he decided to build one like this. Inside there is a little scaled model where you can see two masts with a length of 21 and 18 meters that will be installed later.
What´s the motivation for all this? With his parents, "passionated watersportsmen" that sailed a lot with Dick and his younger sister on the sea nearby Rotterdam, he learned to sail. Different from kids of the same age he continued to work with sailboats. In the region of Woerden to where they moved in between he asked all their neighbours if he could build a boat on their ground. He shows photos of a [overnaadse] boat in a ditch, paying much attention on the woodwork like the visible front sides of the wood that "should have been made different". He earned the money for the material by delivering newspapers. At an age of 12 he sailed alone on the north sea near Ijmuiden on a boat that he refitted. His parents were in sorrow about this, tried to hold him back, which caused him to ran away from home at the age of 14. Later, when his family realized his capabilities on boats, he was acknowledged.
After finishing school he went for theoretical and practical education to the school for inland navigation for 4 years and thereafter he was seaman on the "Vigilia". Exept the captain he was the only crewmember and he was Jack-of-all-trades for loading, unloading and everything from cooking to repairing the engine. After 2 1/2 year he had enough because he could only live his passion at the rare free weekends. In 1985 19 year old Dick started to build a new boat, the "Diario", in an empty greenhouse. He declares that a ship of limited size that is designed for the sea has to be a sailship. I see photos of a big grinding wheel inside a self constructed machine that is driven by a washing-machine´s motor. Within a few month he builds a beautiful shaped sailing yacht that was rolled out of the greenhouse on its side, "a question of meters". Dick wants to make each single part by himself, it gives him faith to it, working it out exactly, fitting in each part and knowing what it can take. "Diario" is Portuguese and means diary, and Dick wanted to fill this "diary" with daily life and journeys.
Together with his German wife he started a 7 year lasting world-circumnavigation. During this journey their two daughters, Laura and Kim, were born. Thick photo-albums contain pictures of sights of South-America, Australia and Asia. There are also the classic pictures of the falmily with their upgrowing children but in exotic and idyllic places. "That was a phantastic time" Dick declares frankly. But there were also dangerous adventures, a hurricane near the Fiji-islands, causing three knockdowns of the ship, the only time that Dick was in doubt that the ship will be able to take it. Hanging in a crane upside down in New-Zealand causing them to stay one year longer for the repairing, they got all support from the authorities and they wanted to stay there forever. From Indonesia they had to escape from breathtaking smoke caused by huge woodfires. While his wife was back in the Netherlands with their kids Dick sailed within three month alone to the Netherlands.
In 1998 they settled down in Lelystad. Dick founded a workshop causing a lot of work and delivered a lot of money and he began to make plans to build the "Havör" that would offer enough room to live there with the family. With help from Jan de Rooy of the AWA-store he found a perfect place at Dick Quaadgras. Living in the polder, much work, caring for the children, the temptations and stress from the welfare state was a great contrast to living together on a boat, go wherever you want and solve all problems by your own. The marriage couldn´t take it.
The house and the "Diario" were sold. Kim went with her mother, Laura wanted to live with her father, first in a caravan near the boat during its construction and now on it. Laura, 11 years old, frail, blond, brown eyed, comes home with a bag of bisquits ["oliebollen", Nederland speciality] from the kiosk that she rode by on the way home from school, "I could not resist" she says. I already saw her joining a sailing course and winning a "Mirror" competition at Rijn en Lek. The cups in her room tell from this, it is a comfortable girls-room, pieces of handicraftwork, drawings and piles of youth books about the "Kameleon" and "Suskes en Wiskes". There is also a one-wheel-bike that Laura rides while showing some tricks. Laura likes challenges and is often on the water, even at rough weather, earlier in a "Mirror" with orange sails, and since last autumn in a "Hurley" with Spot as a permanent ship´s mate in a life-vest on deck. Sometimes she sails with friends swinging to loud music. The "Hurley Tycho" is a fast cabin sailboat, first I thought that the "real" skipper was sitting warm and dry in the cabin. But she sailed alone with Spot. She is really unique, she is following her fathers footsteps. 12 years ago Laura was born in New-Zealand when her parents were at Whangary harbour with the "Diario". She is now in the final year at the basic school and knows exactly that like in her childhood her future should be sailing with boats.
How to go on? Dick sees himself as a transient. The authorities make it very difficult to live permanently on a boat in the dead arm [of the Rijn]. He is working now half days at the boatbulding shop at the "Steenfabriek [de Lunenburg]" and guesses that he will need five years to finish the "Harvör". The most spectacular moment will be the set up of the two masts. Then there will be sailing tests. Just imagine it as a stage for the shantychoir or with the members of "Rijn en Lek" as crewmember. Again there will be cranes necessary for its way to the sea. Then he will make his plans according to the wishes and needs of Laura, who is having it at its best here. For Dick still the ship and the sea is his home. Safe and sound journey and a happy homecoming.

Laura Dekker will exclusively write a column for the Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad about her solo-circumnavigation. "PORTIMAO, Portugal (AFP) – Sailors at a Portuguese marina said it is several days since they last spotted Dutch teen Laura Dekker, who is scheduled to launch her solo worldwide sailing tour on Saturday.

A Belgian boat owner from the Portimao marina said Dekker's red-hulled, 11.5-metre (38-foot) ketch Guppy, had not been there since Wednesday.

"I do not know where they are," said Marijke Schaapok, head of the television company Masmedia that has an exclusive agreement with 14-year-old Dekker to cover her bid to become the youngest person to sail around the world solo.

She said the young sailor had gone out on the yacht with her father for last minute tests, but she had not been able to contact them since.

Dekker's manager Peter Klarenbeek, who told AFP on Friday that she would begin her attempt on Saturday, was not answering his phone.

Dekker turns 17 on September 20, 2012, allowing her a little over two years to complete the world trip, during which she intends to stop at several ports along the way.

Faced with some reports in the national press on the alleged departure of the Dutch girl Laura Dekker from a domestic port, and because there are true navy - National Maritime Authority clarifies the following:
On August 14 a vessel named Guppy entered the port of Portimão, is a two-masted sailboat, with 11.40 m long and 3.76 m wide.
The August 16, two agents of the Maritime Police (PM) performed the supervision of the craft and identified as skipper of the vessel Mr. Dick Dekker (father of the young) with documentation that enables him to drive the boat and is also aboard the daughter of 14 years, Laura Deckker without qualification that will allow the conduct of the craft. It was further observed that had the equipment for ocean navigation.
On August 17, the father and the couple went to the Captaincy of the Port of Portimão and asked if there was a problem, since they have been inspected the day before, they were informed that the review concluded that the couple was not entitled alone to drive that type of vessel.
On 18 August, at 9:40 a.m., the Guppy ship left the port of Portimao and just outside the harbor was again supervised by a vessel of the PM, that review found that three people were in the boat, the skipper (father of the young ), the sailor Laura Dekker and his agent, Peter Klarenbeek.
Were told MPs that officials were testing the equipment of the boat, not knowing what would be the journey, nor would return to Portimão.
After the review the PM followed them up to 12 miles (exit of the territorial sea) where the three people aboard.
The MP noted that they did not return within days to the port of Portimao.
Beyond these facts, most reports that the couple, who previously had been controlled by the PM, had no documentation to enable him to drive a boat alone with those features, so in the light of the Portuguese legislation, the couple did not have the conditions necessary to exit.

Dick Dekker will also become a promising man of action. Before the turn of the centenary he put up his patterns in a corner of a coalshed and as the years went on it became an impressive big white ship that he has already tested an which is now waiting in the harbour for further improvement. I´m curiously searching for Dick, the builder of this ship, that reminds me to the arc of Noah because of its size. On my question if he is preparing for a new Deluge caused by global warming he laughs like a young boy, but declares that this is not an arc but a sailship. A friendly fourty-yearold who has his home on this ship together with his daughter Laura and their dog Spot. His motivations to work on this is come from himself and have been decisive for his life since he was a little kid.
When he was a young boy he preferred being outside and occupying himself with boats for discovering the world by sailing. He built around a dozen boats. He is willingly answering my questions in a modest way that does not meet his extraordinary creation. "Havör" is the norwegian word for sea eagle and it was designed an drew by Dick from a model of a norwegian trawler. He saw a boat of this type in a harbour during his circumnavigation with his family, also with a selfbuild sailboat. Not caring much about the boats size and the room that it would offer he became that impressed by the sailing qualities of this boat that he decided to build one like this. Inside there is a little scaled model where you can see two masts with a length of 21 and 18 meters that will be installed later.
What´s the motivation for all this? With his parents, "passionated watersportsmen" that sailed a lot with Dick and his younger sister on the sea nearby Rotterdam, he learned to sail. Different from kids of the same age he continued to work with sailboats. In the region of Woerden to where they moved in between he asked all their neighbours if he could build a boat on their ground. He shows photos of a [overnaadse] boat in a ditch, paying much attention on the woodwork like the visible front sides of the wood that "should have been made different". He earned the money for the material by delivering newspapers. At an age of 12 he sailed alone on the north sea near Ijmuiden on a boat that he refitted. His parents were in sorrow about this, tried to hold him back, which caused him to ran away from home at the age of 14. Later, when his family realized his capabilities on boats, he was acknowledged.
After finishing school he went for theoretical and practical education to the school for inland navigation for 4 years and thereafter he was seaman on the "Vigilia". Exept the captain he was the only crewmember and he was Jack-of-all-trades for loading, unloading and everything from cooking to repairing the engine. After 2 1/2 year he had enough because he could only live his passion at the rare free weekends. In 1985 19 year old Dick started to build a new boat, the "Diario", in an empty greenhouse. He declares that a ship of limited size that is designed for the sea has to be a sailship. I see photos of a big grinding wheel inside a self constructed machine that is driven by a washing-machine´s motor. Within a few month he builds a beautiful shaped sailing yacht that was rolled out of the greenhouse on its side, "a question of meters". Dick wants to make each single part by himself, it gives him faith to it, working it out exactly, fitting in each part and knowing what it can take. "Diario" is Portuguese and means diary, and Dick wanted to fill this "diary" with daily life and journeys.
Together with his German wife he started a 7 year lasting world-circumnavigation. During this journey their two daughters, Laura and Kim, were born. Thick photo-albums contain pictures of sights of South-America, Australia and Asia. There are also the classic pictures of the falmily with their upgrowing children but in exotic and idyllic places. "That was a phantastic time" Dick declares frankly. But there were also dangerous adventures, a hurricane near the Fiji-islands, causing three knockdowns of the ship, the only time that Dick was in doubt that the ship will be able to take it. Hanging in a crane upside down in New-Zealand causing them to stay one year longer for the repairing, they got all support from the authorities and they wanted to stay there forever. From Indonesia they had to escape from breathtaking smoke caused by huge woodfires. While his wife was back in the Netherlands with their kids Dick sailed within three month alone to the Netherlands.
In 1998 they settled down in Lelystad. Dick founded a workshop causing a lot of work and delivered a lot of money and he began to make plans to build the "Havör" that would offer enough room to live there with the family. With help from Jan de Rooy of the AWA-store he found a perfect place at Dick Quaadgras. Living in the polder, much work, caring for the children, the temptations and stress from the welfare state was a great contrast to living together on a boat, go wherever you want and solve all problems by your own. The marriage couldn´t take it.
The house and the "Diario" were sold. Kim went with her mother, Laura wanted to live with her father, first in a caravan near the boat during its construction and now on it. Laura, 11 years old, frail, blond, brown eyed, comes home with a bag of bisquits ["oliebollen", Nederland speciality] from the kiosk that she rode by on the way home from school, "I could not resist" she says. I already saw her joining a sailing course and winning a "Mirror" competition at Rijn en Lek. The cups in her room tell from this, it is a comfortable girls-room, pieces of handicraftwork, drawings and piles of youth books about the "Kameleon" and "Suskes en Wiskes". There is also a one-wheel-bike that Laura rides while showing some tricks. Laura likes challenges and is often on the water, even at rough weather, earlier in a "Mirror" with orange sails, and since last autumn in a "Hurley" with Spot as a permanent ship´s mate in a life-vest on deck. Sometimes she sails with friends swinging to loud music. The "Hurley Tycho" is a fast cabin sailboat, first I thought that the "real" skipper was sitting warm and dry in the cabin. But she sailed alone with Spot. She is really unique, she is following her fathers footsteps. 12 years ago Laura was born in New-Zealand when her parents were at Whangary harbour with the "Diario". She is now in the final year at the basic school and knows exactly that like in her childhood her future should be sailing with boats.
How to go on? Dick sees himself as a transient. The authorities make it very difficult to live permanently on a boat in the dead arm [of the Rijn]. He is working now half days at the boatbulding shop at the "Steenfabriek [de Lunenburg]" and guesses that he will need five years to finish the "Harvör". The most spectacular moment will be the set up of the two masts. Then there will be sailing tests. Just imagine it as a stage for the shantychoir or with the members of "Rijn en Lek" as crewmember. Again there will be cranes necessary for its way to the sea. Then he will make his plans according to the wishes and needs of Laura, who is having it at its best here. For Dick still the ship and the sea is his home. Safe and sound journey and a happy homecoming.

Laura Dekker will exclusively write a column for the Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad about her solo-circumnavigation. MasMedia TV will produce and distribute Laura's adventure her manager, Peter Klarenbeek confirmed yestersay. Laura has cameras on board Guppy and will decide when and what images will be provided. Masmedia is in discusions with several parties for broadcasting in Netherlands and foreign countries.

"PORTIMAO, Portugal (AFP) – Sailors at a Portuguese marina said it is several days since they last spotted Dutch teen Laura Dekker, who is scheduled to launch her solo worldwide sailing tour on Saturday.

A Belgian boat owner from the Portimao marina said Dekker's red-hulled, 11.5-metre (38-foot) ketch Guppy, had not been there since Wednesday.

"I do not know where they are," said Marijke Schaapok, head of the television company Masmedia that has an exclusive agreement with 14-year-old Dekker to cover her bid to become the youngest person to sail around the world solo.

She said the young sailor had gone out on the yacht with her father for last minute tests, but she had not been able to contact them since.

Dekker's manager Peter Klarenbeek, who told AFP on Friday that she would begin her attempt on Saturday, was not answering his phone.

Dekker turns 17 on September 20, 2012, allowing her a little over two years to complete the world trip, during which she intends to stop at several ports along the way.

The MP noted that they did not return within days to the port of Portimao.
Beyond these facts, most reports that the couple, who previously had been controlled by the PM, had no documentation to enable him to drive a boat alone with those features, so in the light of the Portuguese legislation, the couple did not have the conditions necessary to exit.

After a monster-tour of two months, Sailor Laura Dekker (16) has arrived near the South African coast. She has covered a distance of 6000 nautical miles which is about 10000 kilometres. 'I often had to sail with headwinds and for the first weeks I almost had no wind at all' she says via her onboard e-mail system.

The crossing from Darwin to South Africa was her most difficult leg so far. 'She made it entirely unscathed, which is a great achievement for any sailor and especially for a 16 year old sailor' her father Dick proudly declares.

During her crossing of the Indian Ocean Laura also sailed the same location where Abby Sunderland, an American teenager who made an attempt to sail solo around the world, dismasted during a storm – that pot an end to her attempt. Laura too experienced a heavy storm one night and the following morning she related that 'I had to deal with force 9 winds and 8 meters high waves'.

But she was not afraid. 'It was not the first time that Guppy and I had to go through heavy weather, and besides I know my boat to be sturdy enough and that she can take a few uppercuts.'

At the start Laura had planned to go through the Gulf of Aden and then go on to sail to Gibraltar. But in the end she decided to go with the South Africa route and to keep quiet about it fearing the pirates that infest the Indian Ocean.

"Obviously his [Mr. Schröder's] ego is bigger than a sailboat!"

Reporter: "You are nominated for the CvR trophy?"

Lucas Schröder: "Right..."

R.: "Could you tell us a bit more about this award?"

L.S.: "It's a very prestigious award in the Netherlands..."

R.: "... THE most prestigious award of the Netherlands..."

L.S.: "...yes, being nominated at all is a great honour by itself."

R.: "And you are nominated along with... Laura Dekker, something you were not happy about?”

L.S.: "Er... yes, I have had some problems about that.
In my opinion it [Laura's voyage] is a very controversial project that I don't want to be associated with."

- At Laura's grandparents' home -

Riek Dekker (Laura's grandmother): "Among sailors her achievements are very well respected."

Reporter: "But why is there someone like Lucas Schröder, naming it [Laura's voyage] a 'ridiculous project' - I don't want it?" [The CvR trophy]

R.D.: "Well, I cannot look inside his mind..."

- At the marina -

L.S.: [Very difficult to understand! Obviously he is in doubt about Laura's ability to make proper decisions]

R.: "She [Laura] knows what she wants, so you actually should find it [her voyage] a cool thing to do?"

L.S.: "Well, cool... maybe. However, I think it's very difficult for young people to make the right decisions."

R.: "Such a nasty discussion!"

Dick Dekker (Laura's grandfather): "Yes, that's indeed a nasty discussion, like many before."

R.: "That's the route that Laura has sailed so far?"

R.D.: "That's right."
[She points at the leg from Darwin to Durban] "It was a very difficult leg."
[She points at the Torres Strait] "Here she had to stay awake for 48 hours."

D.D.: "Laura in fact has all her affairs in order and she is making well thought decisions."

L.S.: "Personally I don't find it very smart to give an award to her since you then would legitimate what she's doing, and I don't find this acceptable."

- At Laura's grandparents' home -

R.: "Have you heard about the latest interferences by completely strangers?"

R.D.: "Yes. And Laura knows about that, too."

R.: "She's a role model for the juveniles."

L.S.: "Yes... I think she is a role model that shows that it is good to be ambitious and that trying to realize you ambitions is something very nice."

R.D.: "[Laura sailed] through the Panama Canal and to Polynesia..."

R.: [pointing at the leg from Darwin to Durban] "That was a long leg, wasn't it?"

R.D.: "A VERY long leg..."

D.D.: [from behind]: "...it took 47 days..."

R.D.: "...and now she at berth is in Durban."

R.: "Keeping this in mind, isn't it remarkable that she [Laura] already spends her young life this way?"

L.S.: "Yep."

- At Laura's grandparents' home -

R.: "What is Laura thinking about her nomination, is she proud of it?"

D.D.: "Yes, she really appreciates it and is very proud of it."

R.: "Imagine you would win [the CvR trophy], then you really would not accept it?"

L.S.: "Nay!"

R.: "[silence]... Isn’t that a bit childish?!"

L.S.: "..." [He shrugs but does not say a thing]
